Makrand Mehta is emeritus professor of History, Gujarat University. He was a visiting professor of history at Gujarat Vidhyapith and the University of Sunderland, U.K. He was president of the Modern India Section, Indian History Congress and Gujarat Itihas Parishad. He is honorary fellow of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai. Author of more than 20 scholarly books in Gujarati and English, Mehta has contributed numerous research papers on social and economic history to prestigious journals. Gujarat's business culture is shaped by its merchants, entrepreneurs, brokers, money-changers, artisans and even non-business people such as religious and moral preachers. The book points out that Gujarat's business ethos in India and the overseas countries was influenced by certain common norms such as peace, pragmatic ethics, cooperation and the spirit of tolerance. Rich in detail and documentation the book will appeal to historians and non-historians, to students, teachers and general readers. It is based on the author's published articles.
