ધીરુબહેન પટેલના ગદ્યનો નિખાર માણવો હોય તો આ પુસ્તકમાં સંગ્રહાયેલી એમની 36 નવલિકાઓમાંથી પસાર થવું પડે. ‘વિનીનું ઘર’ એક સ્ત્રીની વાત છે, જે સમાજની દૃષ્ટિએ સંભવતઃ ચારિત્ર્યહીન છે, પણ જે વાસ્તવમાં પુરુષને શાતા આપનારી, ડગલે ને પગલે ન્યાયાધીશ બનીને ચુકાદો ન તોળતી હૂંફાળી મિત્ર હોઈ શકે છે. ‘જિદ્દી છોકરો’માં આદર્શવાદી વકીલની કહાણી છે, જેના માટે માંહ્યલાનો અવાજ પરિવાર અને પ્રેમિકા કરતાં પણ વધારે મૂલ્યવાન છે. એક તરફ જીવતરનાં મૂળિયાં છેદાઈ જવાથી વેદના અનુભવતી આધુનિકા છે (‘છાપરાવાળું ઘર’) તો બીજી બાજુ, સાવ નાની અમથી ગેરસમજને કારણે ઘૂંધવાઈ જતી નવોઢાની ગમ્મત છે (‘શયનખંડની સાંજ’). આ સાદી સરળ વાર્તાઓનું વિષયવૈવિધ્ય તરત ધ્યાન ખેંચે છે. લાઘવ ધીરુબહેન પટેલની ટૂંકી વાર્તાઓનો આકર્ષક ગુણ છે. એમને પ્રયોગખોરીમાં રસ નથી. એમને કેવળ વાર્તા કહેવી છે. વાચનનો આહ્લાદ પેદા કરતો સરસ મજાનો વાર્તાસંગ્રહ.
